Author Spotlight!

K. L. Grayson

Author Interview

What prompted you to write your first book?

I've had characters floating around in my head telling me stories for as long as I can remember. In fact, I believe it was in the second grade that I wrote my very first book. It was about a wolf and a boy. If I remember correctly it was titled The Silhouette.
Several years ago, for fun, I wrote a short story and I had so much fun doing it, so I kept writing them and It was at that time ... when I finally put the characters and words to paper, that I truly felt whole. That's the point where I said this is for me. This makes me happy. It wasn't until several years later (which you'll read about in the next question) that I decided to lengthen the short story which ended up being my debut novel Where We Belong.

Is there anything or anyone in particular that you draw inspiration from?

I don't think that anyone in particular inspires me to write. That inspiration came from within, but there were definitely certain authors that inspired to pursue my dream of publishing. I can still remember reading Leo by Mia Sheridan. I loved the book so much that I looked her up on Amazon to see if she had written any other books and that's when I discovered that it was her first book and she was an Indie author. At the time I just thought "Wow! She did that. She made her dream come true." I remember thinking to myself. I wonder if I could do that? Needless to say I didn't pursue my dream at that time. A little while later I was reading Because You're Mine by K. Langston and the same thing happened. I looked for more books written by her and discovered that it too was her debut novel. Then, a switch flipped and I thought okay, that's twice ... maybe I can do this!

Which story has been your favorite to write?

Well, that's easy because I've only written one ... LOL. But in all honesty, the book I'm writing now, Pretty Pink Ribbons, is by far my favorite ... not just because it's Levi's book, and HELLO it's Levi, but because the I love the story line in general.

Is there a book concept you’re just dying to write?

The one I'm writing now ... I've been dying to start Pretty Pink Ribbons, and I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

Which character of yours, is your favorite?

Oh gosh ... that's a tough one. I feel like I connected really well with Harley because she is a mother, but I really really like Levi. He is just a solid character. He is strong and caring and smoking hot *wink* and I'm really having fun writing his story.

Do you have a favorite book?

Hmmm ... that's another tough one. I have so many favorite books, I'm not sure I could actually narrow it down. Okay ... let me do this ... I have GO TO authors! How about that!
Mia Sheridan -- I LOVE Stinger and Archer's Voice
Kristen Proby -- Fight With Me is my favorite of hers
Jill Shalvis -- I absolutely love her Lucky Harbor Series
Ella Frank -- Exquisite, Entice and Edible

Who is your favorite Disney character?

Ariel ... Don't ask me why because I have no idea!! LOL

Do you have a method to your writing process? Outlining, etc.

I wish I had a method ... but I don't. I like to just sit down at my computer and write what my characters say ... I like them to just guide me where they want me. (Hmmm ... that sounds a little strange huh? Yes, I talk to my characters)

Have you ever gone back to book you’ve published and wished you could have changed the ending or some other major aspect of the story?

YES! Well, I've only published one, but I left out a unanswered question ... completely by accident. I've decided since then to write the scene and I'm going to post it to my author page after its edited!

What is the one piece of advice you’d give to new writers?

Write for YOU ... always write for YOU. Because if you start writing for other people then you'll learn fast that you cannot make everyone happy. At the end of the day, you have to bed happy with your book and your words.

Regret . . . she's a snarky little bitch.

I’ve tried several times to regret the events that took place on June 5, 2008, but for the life of me, I can’t. I'd never regret the pain, the suffering, or the heartache because it ultimately led me to the place I am now. And I can’t regret the place I am now. What I still can't figure out is this: how is it possible that the single worst day of my life inadvertently became the very best day?

Five years ago my life was irrevocably changed.

Seventeen minutes was all it took—
to lose my best friend…
to lose the love of my life…

Seventeen minutes was all it took for the seeds of hope—the seeds of my future—to be planted in the worst possible way.

My name is Harley Thompson, and this is my story.
