✿ Synopsis ✿
They say the only good thing about hitting rock bottom is that it can't get any worse . . . or can it?
World famous boxing champ, Felix Sanchez, had it all—the fame, the fortune, and all the women any man could ask for. When the hours of partying followed by hours spent in court and in rehab begin to outnumber the hours he spends training, losing his title comes as no surprise to everyone. The world assumes he deserved to lose it.
Only those closest to Felix know the real truth behind his sudden downward spiral. And if Felix has his way, no one else ever will. With an uncertain future ahead of him, he heads back to his roots—5th Street—the gym that started it all for him. It's where he meets the humble but mighty little Ms. Ella.
The only times Felix had ever decided to forgo the usual meaningless fling and try a real relationship he was burned badly. Now the adorable but tenacious self-defense instructor has him considering this love thing one more time.
Then just when he begins to worry that his past is letting his possessive and jaded heart get the best of him, he's blindsided in the most brutal way—he's brought to his knees—to what could be the one low in his life he may never recover from.
✿ Review ✿ 4 Stars
This book took me a little
to get into it, but by the end, I really enjoyed it.
There wasn’t much I didn’t
care for in this book, so I’ll get that out of the way. In the very first
section, I really didn’t like Felix, and I was worried that the author would
not be able to redeem in my eyes. She did fairly quickly, however, his turn
around was actually a little too sudden and not very well explained. It’s
wasn’t enough to turn me off of the book, but it was one of the things that
kept me from really diving into it.
The build-up of Ella and
Felix’s relationship is on the slower side, but in a lot of ways, that’s more
realistic, I suppose. However, I would have liked to see it move a little
quicker, just for the pacing of the book. About halfway through however, the
pace does begin to picks up.
The thing I really loved
about their growing relationship was Felix’s hesitation. IT wasn’t that he was
fighting commitment, he honestly seemed confused at what he was feeling for
Ella. He had clearly never felt those emotions for a woman before and it was
endearing to see him try to sort it out. The author redeemed Felix and then
some by showing this sweet side of him. It was endearing to watch him muddle
through his emotions like Bambi learning to walk. Along the way, he learns
thing about Ella and her past relationships that show him what he has to do,
and how he’ll have to change in order to be with Ella. He completely steps up
to the plate.
Ella is definitely a strong
character, so it was a little surprising to me that she would let her
ex-boyfriend trample her the way she does, out of a sense of gratitude. At the
same time, she is clearly a peacemaker and it was obvious that she would rather
not make waves and upset the precarious balance she has achieved in her life.
She has suffered great loss in her life and the traumas of a friend whom she
loves. She is wary of Felix in the beginning, as well she should be, and is
smart in her consideration of whether or not she can handle trying out a
relationship with Felix.
Felix and Ella are so very
good for each other and once they become a couple, I couldn’t help but melt
over their sweet moments, as well as the fiery, passionate ones.
Then, the author threw me
for a loop. The reader learns something about Felix that will give them so much
more insight into his choices.
The author threw a few crazy
twists at me! I definitely wasn’t expecting them, AT ALL.
The surprises and a little
more action made the last half of the book go a lot faster. When I reached the
end, it wasn’t a book that kept me wishing there was more, however I put it
down feeling completely satisfied with the ending. Overall, it was worth the
read. It is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. I will say, it
made me curious about the preceding books, I may decide to go back and read
those.
✿ Excerpt ✿
He
groaned at her touch, arching his back, his arms coming around her tighter.
"Ella," he said anxiously. "We don't have to do anything you
don't want to."
Was
he nuts? She moaned against his lips. Was she giving out any signal that she
didn't want to do this? She'd jumped his bones the moment he fell back on that
chair, and now she was groping him shamelessly.
She
really should slow down. Felix was probably used to this reaction from girls.
Where the hell was her modesty? Just when she was going to try and show a
little self-restraint, Felix lowered his hand down under her skirt and between
her legs.
