The Best Kind of Love
Synopsis:
After twelve years away,
organized consultant, Penelope Walker, doesn’t expect to return to Blue Lake,
Virginia. But when her parents unexpectedly die, she returns to her hometown
and finds out that general contractor and former love of her life, Ethan
Callahan, is back too. Their relationship transcended the typical high school
romance and his mere presence is enough to have all those feelings of passion
return full force. Only she can’t forget that Ethan didn’t show up for their
secret elopement and left her brokenhearted.
It doesn’t take long for
Ethan to realize he wants Penelope back, but he knows she won’t let go of the
past that easily. When she finds out what her parents asked him to do all those
years ago, she’ll never let him back into her life. Even though he did all of
it for her.
Penelope’s determined to
unravel the mystery of their shared pasts, while Ethan wants nothing more than
to move on to their future. If these two former lovers can learn to forgive and
forget, will they be able to remember that they had the best kind of love?

My Characters, Just Like Me
Kerri Carpenter
As a writer, I’m often
asked if I base characters on my friends, family, coworkers, enemies, or pretty
much anyone in my real life. My answer is usually a resounding, all-caps,
bold-faced NO.
But as I was going
through the final revision stage of my new book, The Best Kind of Love, a
realization dawned on me. There is someone in my life that seems to shine
through every character. Me.
The Best Kind of Love is not only a love story between former high school
sweethearts Penelope and Ethan, but it’s also the story of four sisters
reuniting. And apparently each of those sisters has something in common with
little old me.
Chloe - Ballerina Chloe is the sweetest of the Walker
sisters. Even though she’s been through her share of hardships, she still
believes in the good in everyone. She’s optimistic, honest, and kind.
How are we alike? I
aspire to be more like her. As much as I may pretend to be cynical, deep down,
my glass is half full.
Scarlett - Wise-cracking baker, Scarlett, has the best
one-liners and she seems to be the reader-favorite so far. She lives life on
her own terms but at the same time, she’s incredibly loyal to those she loves.
She’s quick-witted, bold, and speaks her mind in all situations.
How are we alike? She is
my inner monologue.
Liza - As an actress and model who lives in California,
Liza doesn’t get much play time in this book. But I can give you a little hint
that not all is as it seems with this sister. She may come across as enigmatic,
but that’s only because she feels misunderstood.
How are we alike? You’ll
have to wait for her story to see....
Penelope - Penelope is the main character in The Best Kind of
Love and out of all of the sisters, she’s the most like me. She’s organized, a
planner, and loves anything that’s color-coded. Penelope left her small
hometown and moved to the Washington, DC-area for work, just like me. And yet,
we both think about where we come from all the time.
I love writing this kind
of character. She has a hard time when things don’t go according to plan. So it
was fun to shake up her world with the return of her high school love.
How are we alike? Overly
organized and small town girls at heart.
Kerri Carpenter Bio:
Kerri Carpenter began
writing in her grandmother’s kitchen at the age of seven in a small town
outside of Pittsburgh, PA. A life-long fan of reading, she got lost in the
worlds of The Baby-sitters Club and Sweet Valley High. She also assumed that
everyone had characters and plots forming in their heads at all times.
Once she turned to
romance novels, she couldn’t get enough of books with happy endings, so she
started writing her own. Now, Kerri writes contemporary romances, usually set
in small towns. She enjoys reading, cooking, watching movies, taking Zumba
classes, rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams, and anything sparkly. Kerri lives
in Northern Virginia with her adorable (and mischievous) poodle mix, Harry.

I really enjoyed this post, and it made me even more excited to read the book. And I can relate. I don't bring friends or family into my writing. But I do find that I add some of my own characteristics. Nervous habits I might have, one of my characters might have. A favorite perfume I wear, it may be the signature scent of one of my characters. I think I am more aware of those things I add but there are more subtle parts of myself that trickle through to my characters. Sometimes I don’t see it until much later. I re-read something and I will realize.
