In
the latest tantalizing Rule Breakers novel from Jennifer Chance, an
irresistible alpha male follows his ex into a deadly standoff—and reignites a
heated affair.
For Erin Connelly, being a good girl
isn’t such a bad thing. She’s working her dream job at a Boston art gallery and
staying out of trouble, which is more than she can say for her deadbeat mom.
Unfortunately, her mother’s latest misadventure lands her in the clutches of a
Mexican drug lord. Now the only person who can save her is the one man Erin has
no business asking for help: the sexy-as-sin army ranger who just so happens to
be her former high school sweetheart.
Zander James is no gentleman—and no
officer, either, thanks to Erin. Four years ago, she made a call that
terminated his highest aspirations . . . and their relationship. He’s never
forgiven her, but when he learns that Erin’s embarking on a half-baked rescue
mission, he sure as hell can’t let her go alone. Now, with a treacherous enemy
lying in wait, the electrifying tension between them may just be Zander’s
undoing. Because while he may be able to keep Erin alive, he can’t promise to
keep his hands off her.
4 Stars
I thoroughly
enjoyed this book! It’s well written and the storyline kept me interested. It’s
got a little bit of suspense, though not enough to put it in that category.
There was room for action and for the story to grow in that direction, however
the author chose to focus on their relationship. It’s complicated enough without
throwing too much into the story from the sidelines. The reader has to be
focused on them, or the angst and depth of emotion would be lost in the
shuffle. The characters would have seemed too deep for the plot. So, I think
she had a nice balance.
Erin and
Zander are both really complex characters. They have layers that are damaged
and buried deep under a façade they have protected. However, it seems that they
are each other’s own brand of kryptonite. The only person who can break the façade
and heal or destroy those damaged layers.
The
history between these two is full of angst. Their relationship as teenagers was
intense and hot, explosive even. The problem was that neither of them really
knew how to handle the intensity. They were both still trying to find
themselves amongst less than ideal home lives, though Zander’s was certainly a
pittance compared to Erin’s. Unfortunately, that meant it basically imploded.
Erin is
strong and independent, but she is also naïve and a huge pessimist. She doesn’t
want to receive anything, whether it’s a gift or offer of help. It was a little
too much for me sometimes, I got a little tired of her attitude. Not to mention
the thing that drove Zander crazy about her was also my biggest pet peeve. She
expects the worst, ALL THE TIME. She just looks for reasons for situations to
fail, accepting that fate before she has any idea which way it night have gone.
I didn’t dislike her though, and I definitely had sympathy for the situations
that made her that way. So, even though I was really frustrated with her at
times, it didn’t make me want to stop reading.
Zander is
strong, sexy, and intelligent. He’s obviously got a big heart but he is
seriously scarred from his fall out with Erin, and then from losing his father
before being able to patch up their relationship. He’s quite lost, but when
Erin comes to him for help, despite his hurt and anger, I think he senses that
she is a life line. That she has the ability to help the world make sense. He
fights those instincts pretty hard, but on some level, he knows they are there.
He’s got some alpha in him and it definitely adds to his appeal.
There are
some pretty steamy scenes that will have you reaching for some ice! The amount
of sexual tension between them just explodes when they let go. There is also a
tenderness between them that is sweet and helps build a foundation under the
rocks they are stumbling through.
The only
reason it’s not 5 stars is that it didn’t grip me quite enough and Erin had a
few too many moments where I was really annoyed with her. Even more than that
though, was the epilogue. It didn’t leave me feeling content and satisfied. It
wasn’t solid enough for me. I honestly would have preferred for it to end where
it did without it. However, these things aren’t enough to keep me from
recommending the book. As I said, I did enjoy it. I’m interested to go back and
read the books preceding this one. As well as keeping my eye out for the next
one.
