Smythe-Smith Quartet # 4

Avon Romance
Sir
Richard Kenworthy has less than a month to find a bride. He knows he can’t be
too picky, but when he sees Iris Smythe-Smith hiding behind her cello at her
family’s infamous musicale, he thinks he might have struck gold. She’s the type
of girl you don’t notice until the second-or third-look, but there’s something
about her, something simmering under the surface, and he knows she’s the one.
Iris
Smythe-Smith is used to being underestimated. With her pale hair and quiet, sly
wit she tends to blend into the background, and she likes it that way. So when
Richard Kenworthy demands an introduction, she is suspicious. He flirts, he
charms, he gives every impression of a man falling in love, but she can’t quite
believe it’s all true. And when his proposal of marriage turns into a
compromising position that forces the issue, she can’t help thinking that he’s
hiding something...even as her heart tells her to say yes.
This book reminded me how much I love historical
romance! I’ve always been a fan of Julia Quinn, her historical fiction is so
romantic and believable.
The plot for this book is aptly described in the
title, but the author does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing. Throughout
the book, she gave just enough of a hint to have me wracking my brain trying to
figure out his secret. I did finally guess it, but only a few pages before it
was revealed! It’s a great mystery when you’re kept wondering.
Iris is a great female heroine. She is dry, logical,
and intelligent. These are all traits that draw Richard to her and I loved that
he recognized her unusual beauty right away. Even if it is only a very little, he
still noticed. Then as he spent time with her, he began to truly see that she
has beauty on the inside and the outside. She is also honorable and willing to sacrifice
for her family. One of my favorite characteristics is the fact that she isn’t a
complete doormat. When she is confronted with reasons to be enraged, she lets
the recipient have it!
Sir Richard’s aim is to find a wife…quickly. This
could easily make him reprehensible to the reader. However, Julia Quinn brilliantly
creates a character that is loveable, giving you the ability to overlook his
dishonesty. He is quick to smile, funny, handsome, suave, and smart. He sees
the positive traits in Iris almost immediately. I loved that about him. For the
most part, he was intrigued by her dry wit and her intelligence. However, her
physical beauty becomes apparent to him quickly, though little by little. He
romances her in the sweetest ways and I fell right along with her.
Despite some serious roadblocks,
there is an abundance of desire in the book. The sexual tension is thick and it
had me on edge waiting for it to explode raging passion. Iris and Richard are
well suited together and I was rooting for their happily ever after. The end of
the book left me smiling and had me reaching for another book from this author.
For me, this book is worth reading more than once which means it gets 5
fabulous stars!
