BLURRED
LINES by Jen McLaughlin
January 2015
Once burned...
Finding my fiancée naked on my couch might’ve been
a good thing, if her ex-boyfriend hadn’t been with her. For the past eight
years I’ve been a witness to the power of true love, but after getting
burned I’d decided there wasn’t any hope for me finding it for myself. Until I
met Noelle Brandt in a hotel bar. Maybe it wasn’t the most romantic meeting,
but the moment I met her I knew I had to have her. The more I learn about
her, the more I know I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her.
Twice shy...
I’d already found the love of my life, but I’d lost that love
forever. And I’d been lost ever since. But one night a wounded man makes all of
that go away. He makes me laugh, live, and feel alive. When he tells me he has
no intention of letting me go, I finally begin to believe in the power of
true love again. That is, until I find out who he really is…and by then,
it’s far too late to correct the mistakes we’ve already made. By the time
we both know the truth, the lines have already been blurred beyond
recognition.
Writing Riley and Noelle
Hello! I’m Jen McLaughlin (though I also write books as
Diane Alberts), and I have a new book out called BLURRED LINES! It’s the latest
book in my Out of Line Series, and it revolves around Riley Stapleton (best
friend to Carrie and Finn), and a new character to the series, Noelle Brandt.
When writing characters, sometimes it takes me a while to
really understand them, and to know how they would react to something. With
these two characters…yeah, it didn’t. Never have two characters been so sure,
and so loud, in who they wanted to be.
And the playful banter they have between one another had me
enthralled with each word I typed! They were so much fun to write, and I cannot
express how refreshing this was! The writing process can be tough at times, but
with Riley and Noelle? It was a joy!
Here’s an example of their banter:
“Mmhmm.” I skimmed my
fingers over his shoulders. “So...a lawyer, huh? A rich one, at that?”
“Yep,” he said,
looking at me sheepishly. “You look horrified at the thought. Most girls like
both of those labels.”
“I’m not most girls.”
His fingers flexed on
me. “I’d noticed that.”
“I just hadn’t pegged
you for a lawyer. They’re so...” I tugged at his tie a little more. “Uptight.”
He backed me toward
the wall, his steps predatory. “Is that so?”
“Mmhmm.” I hit the
wall and splayed my hands out on either side of my hips, trapped by his hard
body and loving it. “They certainly wouldn’t have done dirty things to me in my
hotel room.”
“Ah, but this lawyer
did. I did.” He pressed his body against me, slipping his leg between mine. I
moaned when his knee brushed my clit. God, I was already horny as heck and he
hadn’t even really done anything. It was ridiculous. “And I’d like to do it
again, only for real this time.”
I’m curious, since I can feel the difference in characters
that I write…I’m sure you can feel it as the reader, too! So, what was the last
time you read a book, and the characters literally popped off the pages to you
as you read?
And what book was it—cause I wanna read it!
