This book was great! The story was
unique and I loved all of the characters (well, except for the ones I was
supposed to hate.). Maybe I should have figured it out sooner, but I didn’t
catch on to the mysterious treasure until it was revealed. I felt the author
did a great job of keeping me guessing.
Hedley is a pretty fascinating
character. I can’t imagine that anyone who grew up the way she did would turn
out so strong and resourceful, but the author made me believe it. I so wanted
to be her friend, to right the wrongs done to her, and give her the attention
and affection she deserved. She is a mix of stubborn wit and broken fear, that
made me laugh and tugged on my heartstrings,
Rafe. That man blows heat right off
of the pages to burn your skin. He’s good and kind but also an arrogant,
trampling jerk (granted some of that attitude is bred from being left at the
altar and finding out that his runaway fiance never really cared for him, but
still...). Until he meets Hedley. She not only spikes his blood pressure with
her curves, he finds himself admiring her strength and she whittles her way
under his hard exterior bringing out that softer, protective side.
Both Hedley and Rafe are after the
same thing and are at odds to gain it. However, a common enemy brings them
together and the closer they get the more likely it is that the passion between
them will explode. The sexual tension between these two is seriously palpable.
The other occupants of Fallow Hall
are a hoot and I enjoyed getting to know them. I’m hooked on the series and the
previous one that this is a spinoff of. I’ll be adding those to my kindle and
be lost in reading them in no time!
A fun and intriguing story, I give
it 5 historical stars.
