I’ve
read all of the books in this series and I’d be hard pressed to pick a
favorite, but it just might be this one! As usual, Joanna Shupe does an
excellent job taking you back to Victorian England. I’m never jarred out of the
story by things that are too modern or too unbelievable. However, it’s still a
romance novel, so there is plenty of fanciful love and adventure.
Quint was always an adorable addition
to the other books. As a supporting character, he was a voice of reason, a
major source of support, and his dry wit is quite funny sometimes. So, it came
as a bit of a shock to me, seeing how debilitated he becomes. What he’s dealing
with is a very real thing, but at that time, medicine was somewhat educated
guessing. And they often got it wrong. It was heartbreaking, however there were
times when I was frustrated because he seemed to be just giving up.
What came as the biggest surprise to
me with Quint, was that despite his description in the other books, I hadn’t
really out him in the “sexy” category. After reading a few chapters of this
book, he was firmly in that corner with his other friends. He is so irrationally
passionate underneath his studious intelligence.
This may seem a weird thing for me to
latch onto, but I have to say, I loved the way the author made Quint’s thoughts
match his outward intellect. He refers to things in a clinical nature, even
during the passionate scenes. It threw me a little the first time he referred
to her vagina, because it’s not the usual way a hero things in a romance novel.
Then after a second, I started to chuckle because it was exactly what a guy
like this would think. Why wouldn’t he apply that same way of thinking and
speaking at all times? The steamy scenes are just as hot, and feel all the more
real because of that correlation.
Sophie is so tempestuous, a complete
imp, and a fun, loveable character. Her stance against marriage becomes clear
in this book and it really broke my heart. So much hurt and loneliness that
could have been avoided, if only. Now, she is basically a PI for the less
fortunate, prostitutes in particular. She’s been drawn into a nasty, tangled
web, and is frequently risking her life. I couldn’t help but completely admire
her determination and spunk. Her maid annoyed me though, her proprietary
attitude got on my nerves.
Quint cares so much about Sophie but
he doesn’t feel right saddling her with what he perceives as a bleak future for
himself. But, he makes the best effort t that he can in helping her and keeping
her safe. And, Sophie returns the feelings, and is determined to help him move
beyond his current limitations. The past misunderstanding between them sucks,
although it wasn’t one of those ridiculous situations when the hero and heroine
are just being idiots. It was pretty unavoidable in their situation, so it
bothered me less that most “misunderstanding” romances.
The Lady Hellion has a lot for action
and mystery than the first two books, but just as much fun and engaging
characters. The book kept me turning pages and all too soon, it was over. The
Lady Hellion is a fantastic read, but I really do recommend that you read the
whole series!
