Review - 5 Stars
Hard to Let Go, what an apt title.
I loved this series and it will be really tough to say goodbye to it. Although,
if someone could suggest to Laura Kaye that she could have a great spinoff with
a security company… *wink wink*
It’s
amazing that these book are so deeply interconnected, but they can so easily be
read as a standalone. The author truly knew where to draw the line with
updating new readers to the backstory and keeping the readers who have gone through
the series from getting bored. The whole suspense/mystery side of the plot is
fabulous, very well crafted, and complicated without being confusing. I would
also venture to guess that the author has done a lot of research because there an
accurate feel, and the details ae fantastic.
As
always, I love the characters in this series. It is such a joy to be able to
revisit them all in each book. Beckett has definitely been a huge mystery
throughout this series. He’s been the one hiding in the background, making me
curious. He is the strong, silent, tortured hero and now we finally get to go
behind the mask and see what he is all about. In the beginning, he is
everything on the inside that he looks to be on the outside. Gruff, focused,
impatient, strong, etc, etc, etc. So, when he begins to explore his vulnerabilities,
it’s even more poignant.
Beckett’s
childhood was a hell on earth, and his scars are as deep on the inside as they
are on the outside. Letting them go is a long and hard road, but I loved seeing
Beckett work to find that path, even when setbacks happen, he finds a way to
cling to the possibilities of being free of those demons.
One
of my favorite things about this series is the way the author doesn’t make
light of the effects of war on these men. Even after they find love. It’s not
all rainbows and sunshine, but that love is a line of light, to give you something
to walk toward as you fight your way out of the darkness. The fact that these
guys recognize the need for help, don’t let their macho alpha ways, and big
egos stop them from making healthy decisions for their mental state, is
admirable.
Kat
is a fun character, she doesn’t take any shit and she is tough as nails. Well,
except for her soft heart. She’s a rule follower, a true believer in the
justice system. But, it’s hard to follow that edict when she sees how the
system not only let her brother down, but tried to grind him into the ground.
She takes a leap to help them, one that is a huge risk to herself and as time
goes on, and she proves over, and over, that she is an asset and a worthy
member of the team.
The
chemistry between these two is off the charts! The sex scenes are steamy,
steamy, oh so hot! I was practically panting over Beckett right along with Kat.
That man is a walking advertisement for sex.
There
is so much action and adventure, never a dull moment, and it keeps the story in
constant motion, though at times, it slows down to let the story and the reader
breathe. As I said, I incredibly sorry to see this series end, it’s really
fantastic and I recommend it with 5 huge stars!
