REVIEW - 4.5 Stars
This is a really cute series. I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed each book. Although they can absolutely be read as a
standalone, it’s fun to catch up with the characters from the previous books.
Jennifer Probst always writes characters that I fall in love with.
Arilyn
is a sweet girl. Her spiritual beliefs, and staunch positions on certain
causes, could make her seem flighty or eccentric, but somehow, the author
created a stable and solid character that I couldn’t help admiring and rooting
for. She is incredibly strong, and the way that she is determined to find peace
and joy in her life is so commendable. Especially after the harsh realities of
her childhood. When it comes to the therapy, she is so intuitive and it was
great to see validation in what I was assuming about her character, that she
was truly centered and was teaching things she truly believed in.
Considering how centered she is, it
was really amusing when she couldn’t hold on to her fuse around Stone. Their
banter was adorable, but damn, I could totally understand why he pushed her
buttons. I also loved that the author gave Arilyn a different type of
personality from so many heroines, the way that she stood back and let Stone
come to his own conclusions would be hard for any woman. And, if she hadn’t had
the smarts to recognize that just a little whining and complaining would
justify his way of thinking, she would have lost him forever.
Stone (I freaking love that name),
and his dirty mouth are hoooooooot! The chemistry between these two is smoking.
Stone is one of those guys that goes through traumatic events and lets them
shape him into a rough mold, with a false bravado that hides feelings of
unworthiness. Watching him break open and change, not only with Arilyn but with
the animals, was very heart-warming. He certainly pulled himself up from his
bootstraps with the crap childhood and marriage he’d been dealt. He was easy to
love and even though I felt some of Arilyn’s frustration with his snarky
attitude, it was hard not to giggle at it.
I can understand and accept Stone’s
opinion of himself in the beginning, however I had a rough time with how long
it took him to get his head out of his ass. With the way the author built his
character, and some of the conclusions that he came to about his childhood, marriage,
and temper, it was a little unbelievable to me that he would continue to be
that obtuse. I just didn’t see it flowing with his character development. I
also would have liked to see them as a couple a little bit more, the squabbling
and digging at each other came perilously close to being tiring and getting
really old, but it didn’t stop me from loving these two and the story.
As always, Jennifer peppers the
story with the best supporting characters, some of the other cops tickled my
funny bone a lot. Poppy and Joan…well, that was just hilarious, but I could see
how it would be maddening to Arilyn. The girls shape the story with their friendship
and support of each other, and I loved getting to visit with each of them
again.
As with all of Jennifer Probst’s
series, I’m addicted and will always be ready to read the next fabulous book
she writes! 4.5 Stars!
