Review- 3 Stars
I
am a fan of Maya Banks and have always enjoyed her books in the past. Unfortunately,
I was sorely disappointed in this novel.
The
plot is intense and intriguing. It was obviously well researched and the
complex story well laid out. I did find myself becoming somewhat attached to
the characters, empathizing with their pain and admiring their strength.
I
wanted to be hooked from the beginning, however the book started out slow and
didn’t pick up until over halfway through the book. Even then, it dragged on
and off. I often found myself skimming to reach the next bout of dialogue
because it was so wordy.
Maya’s
writing can be very poetic, but the lyrical nature is lost in the overwhelming
amount of words. I felt as though she took five pages to describe what could
have been beautifully done in one. Along with this amount of words came the
common result of being overly repetitive. IT made it very difficult to get
through and I struggled to reach the end.
There
were redeeming qualities and it’s possible that other people wouldn’t be
bothered by the things that kept from truly enjoying and being immersed in this
story. The idea of the series put all of the books on my TBR, however, after
reading Darkest Before Dawn, I’m not so sure. Although, one book does not make
a series and I may decide to give them a chance in the future.
