REVIEW - 4 Stars!
Grab a fan for this one! This book is HOT! Like all Jennifer
Probst novels, this was a fantastic read!
The story was a fun premise, especially if you are a fan of
HGTV, or sexy constructions workers! The author doesn’t overwhelm you with
technical information, but she gives enough for the reader to understand the
series of events and even more, for the reader to truly be able to envision the
scenes. Every location, Cal’s house, the new house they are building, the bar,
etc, I could see them all right in front of me. Throw is shirtless guys with a
hammer (as long as they aren’t vomiting…) and the picture gets a whole lot
enthralling.
The characters are well developed and consistent, I had a
whole myriad of feelings toward them. But, that’s what makes them excellent
characters, whether I loved, hated, was annoyed by, felt compassion for, the
point is, they made me feel.
Caleb and Morgan have an immediate, magnetic attraction. The
sexual tension between these two was intense and when it finally explodes…oh
boy. They also had a witty banter between them that was fun and sharp. By the
end, I could see how they fit together like puzzle pieces.
As individual characters, Cal is so easy to fall for. He’s
completely alpha and confident, but he’s got a sweet side, with a little
vulnerability. Cal is not your typical over the top hero, while he has
everything I love about those types of guys, he also has the ability to stand
back and look at the bigger picture, then admit when he’s wrong. He doesn’t
hide from an apology; he owns up to his actions. He had things to learn about
himself in the story, things he didn’t really like, but again, he recognizes his
failings and corrects his course. He is definitely full of layers. For the most
part, he is a hard worker, responsible, and dedicated to their goal. He’s also
full of love, though he hides it a little more. But, as the story progresses,
we peel back his layers right along with him. Suddenly, little things we didn’t
notice become indicative of a larger flaw, a stubbornness and control factor we
didn’t even notice at first. It’s how he handles the ups and downs, and
discoveries that make him an amazing character.
Morgan was a tougher character for me to like. She was
incredibly manipulative in the beginning and her actions took a dream of Cal’s
right out from under him. Something he’d worked for and earned. When I was on
the cusp of forgiving her, Cal explains what she forced him to give up and even
then, she admits, she would have still done it. Forgiveness was a long time
coming and I’m not sure I’ve ever really let it go. Just writing this review
makes me a little mad at her all over again. And, while she was dealt a lot of
crappy hands in her life, it doesn’t excuse her actions. That being said, she
is definitely full of wit, humor, and dedication. She works hard, knows her
stuff, and has a knack for knowing where to draw the lines between her and the
workers. Despite her professional lack of empathy, she has great compassion and
love for Cal and the people in his life. She redeemed herself quite a bit in my
eyes when she took care of Cal and his brothers on the anniversary of their
mother’s death.
Tristan and Dalton are very intriguing and I can’t wait to
see what Jennifer has in store for them. She’s got a little work ahead of her
for me to like Dalton though. While he’s funny and has sweet moments, he seems
incredibly immature, bull-headed, and definitely a manwhore. But, I have faith
in this author and I know I’ll fall in love with him eventually.
Although the story is complete and there is no cliff hanger,
there are hints at secrets that will keep you waiting for book two on the edge
of your seat. Like other series, they will all be able to be read as a
standalone, but I think after reading book 1, it would be very difficult not to
read the rest of the books! I can’t wait for book two! This book falls on my ‘might
re-read” shelf, but I’m so glad I read it. It’s fun, entertaining, and steamy!
