Lucy Sinclair was no stranger to pain.

She grew up with three younger brothers, met a bad boy, got pregnant by him, married him, and then suffered through a nasty divorce from him. Pain. That was pain. To top it off, she even had to go through the heartbreaking divorce of her parents. Through it all, she survived. All she cared about was making sure her daughter was happy and taken care of. Despite an ex-husband hell-bent on ruining her life, she fought to overcome. She’s gotten to the point that she’s okay with being just okay. She never cared about herself because she never had the time. It was Angie and only Angie she focused on, but that all changed when Benji Paxton offered to help her daughter on the ice.
Benji knew the moment he saw Lucy, he’d never be the same. Especially when she came with the bundle of crazy that was her daughter. His heart wasn’t ready for them. After years spent sobering up and finding who he was without the alcohol, he never forgot he was being punished for not appreciating the love he had when he was younger. Because of his past, he had gotten used to being alone, a recluse, but even he had to admit it was getting old. He was lonely. Hockey wasn’t enough anymore. He wanted a family; he wanted his true love, and Lucy and Angie were just that.

Benji and Lucy were just two lost souls.
Floating through life with no purpose.
But finding each other gave them direction, a chance at a future.

And that had them both Rushing the Goal to be together.

5 Stars and a Standing Ovation!!!

Rushing the Goal is by far the best thing I have ever read by Toni Aleo. I enjoyed the Assassins and Bellevue Bullies series immensely, but Rushing the Goal is just THAT good. It’s everything a reader could want in a book. We get the best of both worlds with appearances by the Assassins and Sinclair families. We get the much loved camaraderie and banter (OMG the banter!) previously experienced in the other books. It is now high up on my list of all-time favorites, which if you knew how many books I read, is high praise indeed. I didn’t want to finish it because halfway through, I already knew it was a book hangover in the making.

Lucy Sinclair is the epitome of “once bitten, twice shy.” Pregnant and married at eighteen, she is a single mother to her seven year old daughter and a cynic when it comes to love after being seriously burned by her ex, Rick the Dick. She has a hard and standoffish exterior, but on the inside what she really wants is to love and be thoroughly loved in return. She may not admit that even to herself, but she wants it nonetheless. With her brothers getting their happily ever after, will it ever be her turn?

Enter Benji Paxton, hockey player for the Assassins and friend to Lucy’s brother, Jayden. He is a recovering alcoholic who has major regrets in his painful past. After a long dry spell he is looking to get out there and date, but with his slight dorkiness and less than stellar social skills, it doesn’t look like any kind of relationship is in his future. Benji meets Lucy at her daughter Angie’s hockey practice (where Shea Adler is the coach!) and he is immediately drawn to her. Lucy being Lucy, rebuffs any advances but Benji isn’t one to give up.

Benji hires Lucy as the interior designer to decorate his sparsely furnished house. Sparks fly and Benji and Lucy embark on a relationship where the sex is hot and their need for each other is even hotter. The chemistry between the two is undeniable. Everything is happening so quickly, but still feels so right. It helps that he immediately bonds with Angie as well. Even with Lucy trying to fight it all, Benji wins her over body and soul.

“’Cause it’s what I do. I rush the goal to score. You are the ultimate goal, and I want to score.”

Their path to a happily ever after isn’t easy, both not fully understanding how quickly they fell. Enter Rick the Dick, and emotions run as high as they can get. I don’t think I have ever hated a character more than Rick. He was a selfish, spiteful, cheating piece of shit. I wanted to reach into the book and choke him with my bare hands. How dare he stand in the way of a happily ever after! Who the hell did he think he was?!?! Ms. Aleo wrote a great love to hate character. Evoking emotion in a reader is a testament of great writing, and Ms. Aleo evoked a whole lot of anger with Rick the Dick. Bravo Toni.

Lucy and Benji, of course, get their happily ever after. Toni Aleo doesn’t write it any other way. They persevered and loved one another enough to overcome any obstacle thrown at them. Lucy found her prince and Benji found his forever family. His love for both Lucy and Angie knows no bounds.

“I don’t look forward to tomorrow as another day; I look forward to it because I get to wake up to you. I get to feel your lips against mine and I get to hear Angie’s laugh. My life is nothing without you two…”

Rushing the Goal is the best book that you will read all year. A thousand thank you’s Ms. Aleo for writing something so wonderful.
