Review - 4 Stars

This was a hard book to review. My rating is based on the fact that not only is it very well written, but for other people, this could easily be a 5 star book. However, it was not something I truly enjoyed or would read again, but that is absolutely a personal preference. Again, it was very well written.

The plot of this book is intense, but it is very well thought out. The mixture of past and present never seemed to mix and leave me confused. The main characters have amazing depth, they are full of layers you have to peel to get to know them,

Knox is everything you could want in a man. Honorable, sexy, loving, a little alpha, etc. Waiting for Harlow, being honest about how much he loves her, and yet keeping her at the right amount of distance so that they never do anything that would be considered wrong. It’s heart-melting, swoon-worthy, and pretty damn sexy. Although, the fact that he didn’t fight for her when she finally turned eighteen did have me very disappointed in him.

Harlow was a little tougher for me. I sympathized with her, tried to have empathy, but I also felt like she had no spine. She started seeing signs with Collin so early and yet chose to “make excuses because she loved him.” I suppose I can’t really judge, I’ve never been in that situation, but it was a slow buildup that sucked her in and never realized it happened. It was like boom, here it is. She should have used her head and her strength to not make such a stupid decision. At some point, she was hopeless and I the fact that she didn’t just end it all does speak to a level of strength, however.

Stop here if you don’t care about my issues with the book because if you can handle the heavy subject and other triggers, I think you’ll really enjoy the book.

This book deals with some really heavy issues and is graphically violent from time to time. The subjects and situations are ones I don’t mind in a book, however I didn’t like that it spent so much time in the worst of times. I needed a break and while the author uses flashbacks to give you a breather, as they are flashbacks and we learn in the prologue what happened, I knew how the backstory eventually ended. Instead of finding that moment where I could step out if the intense, heavy part of the story, I found myself melancholy about what was going to happen in the past. I couldn’t enjoy their love story knowing that she throws it away in the end.

The “misunderstanding” is a common trope for building conflict in a book and it can really drive me crazy if it isn’t done right. Unfortunately, this was one where it drove me crazy. Lack of communication is the killer for relationships. If she thought things were changing, just freaking ask. It’s that simple.

All in all, I was so happy when the book ended. I almost stopped a few times, but I really wanted to see how it worked out for these two, whether they got a happy ending or not. But, I definitely rushed through it after a while. I give it four stars for the level of writing and the depth of the plot and characters. But, it wasn’t my cup of tea.
