#Review Checkmate: This is Effortless by @kennedyfoxbooks

Checkmate: This is Effortless

The Checkmate Duet #4/Drew & Courtney #2
Author: Kennedy Fox
Release Date: April 25, 2017

Introducing book 2 in the new Checkmate Duet Series from a secret duo of romance authors who teamed up under the USA Today Bestselling pseudonym, Kennedy Fox! This friends to lovers romance will have you swooning and laughing from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the game?

***
Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.
Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.
She barged into my life and easily became my best friend.
All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat.
She's the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.

Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn't as easy as it sounds.
Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I'm not so sure she'll stay for the ride.

Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I'll prove we're worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.

Checkmate, sweetheart.

*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*

**This is book 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series--a friends to lovers romance. You must read book 1, Checkmate: This is Reckless first. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.**

REVIEW - 4.5 STARS

Kennedy’s Fox’s newest in the Checkmate Series, This is Reckless, has finally given us Drew and Courtney’s story. I have been waiting to read about them since Viola and Travis’s story. This book does not disappoint- but WARNING: There is an epic cliffhanger that leaves us in suspense until April for the continuation of Drew and Courtney.

Drew, a police officer for the Sacramento PD, and Courtney, best friend to his sister Viola and computer guru for Travis’s company are roommates. Courtney has had is bad for him ever since she met him but figures that being friends and roommates while firmly in the friend zone is better than nothing. It doesn’t help that Drew has an on again, off again crazy bitch girlfriend Mia that is constantly in and out of the picture. One day Drew will see Mia for who she truly is, Courtney just hopes that it is sooner than later.

On the night of Viola and Travis’s wedding, Drew (who is again single) and Courtney get horribly drunk and wake up naked in bed. Courtney doesn’t think that Drew remembers the night before and tries to go on as if nothing happened. When is becomes evident that Drew does in fact remember every detail, the two of them embark on a new and cautious relationship. It doesn’t help that crazy bitch Mia keeps popping her head back in thinking that she and Drew will be together again.
Courtney loves Drew, but dealing with psycho Mia is a little much to deal with sometimes. It doesn’t matter how many times Drew tells her she’s it and Mia means nothing, the history that is there unnerves her still. Drew is all in with Courtney and loves everything about her.

I really liked how Drew and Courtney got together somewhat early in the story and we didn’t have to get to the very end before they became a couple. It was great to watch Drew finally realize what was standing right in front of him. Courtney waited a long time for Drew to finally notice her, and once he does he’s a goner. They really are perfect for each other.

This was a five star read for me up until the very end. I have a love hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love them because it means that there is going to be more of the story, but I hate them for having to wait to read it. Luckily, the wait is pretty short and we can read their continuation soon. What I disliked was what the cliffhanger was. I loved 99.9% of the story, and it’s probably just me, but I didn’t love what happened right at the end. I know in my gut that everything will work out, but personally it just didn’t do it for me. That being said, everything else in this story was gold and I can’t wait to read what happens!

Check out Book 1 in Drew & Courtney's Duet!

Introducing book 1 in the new Checkmate Duet Series from a secret duo of bestselling authors! This friends to lovers romance will have you swooning and laughing from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the game?

Drew Fisher is the type of guy every girl wants.
Noble police officer by day, charming prince by night.
He has no idea the effect he has on women, especially me—his little sister’s best friend.

I’m the blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see that girl.

It’d be easier to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn't his shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it perfectly clear where we stand. Just friends.

I know I need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but every day he smiles at me, I’m left dreaming of what if.

He has girl issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny.
We’re friends, but I want more.

One drunken hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened proves to be more difficult than anticipated.

A crazy ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m the one worth breaking them for.

Checkmate, Prince Charming.

If you enjoy romance stories with sexy, tattooed alpha males and smart, independent women, then a Kennedy Fox book is for you! Both authors are from Manhattan living the glamorous bachelorette life, or perhaps they’re just confusing themselves with an episode of Sex and the City. REVIEW - 5 STARS

This was EVERYTHING!!

Samuel Clearwater. You’re my everything. Because you are the light in all of my dark.

Preppy Preppy Preppy! I am so sad this series is over. What a way to close it out T.m Frazier! This book was everything I wanted it too be and more. You took a beloved character and made him even more lovable. Preppy….sigh...I am really sad. I have sat and thought about how to do this review for over a week and I still don’t have the right words to convey how much I loved this book or series. Talk about speechless and that is something I never am.

Samuel “Preppy” Clearwater is a character that is going to stay in my heart forever. He was a complex character with many different sides too him. I fell for this crazy, geeky, dark and hilarious man in King. He just had this aura about him that c’mon you couldn’t help but love him, he was such a passionate character. Dre this is a girl after my own heart. She was the perfect match for him and when we were introduced to her, I knew she was the one who would accept him for the man he was. She didn’t want him to change from his ways and it was a beautiful story. As crazy and silly as that man could be, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It took a lot of crazy to put up with me and Samuel Clearwater was my kind of crazy.
This has a little humor, a little healing, a lot of love and protecting your family, no matter what. It also has “vintage” Preppy...or the Preppy we first met..LOL

This. This is my life. YOU are my life
I loved the Preppy and Dre’s story. It was dark, beautiful and crazy. Their relationship started in the most unusual way and they had a lot to overcome, but you definitely felt the love and lust between them.
This story picks up right where we left off in Preppy part Two after a shocking cliffhanger. I instantly was sucked back into the story and kept wondering where Tracey was going to go with this next. She paints such vivid scenes its so easy to picture the surroundings, their faces and their fears..seriously T.m. is so talented its crazy!
Anyway, back to a little summary...Preppy is questioning everyone in his life of who he can trust except for those who have never left his side...King, Bear, Thia and Doe. He wants answers of who is dead set on destroying his family. Who keeps messing with Dre and whoever it is, is gonna pay. He will make them bleed for hurting him, her and anyone else he loves. This is told from both Preppy and Dre’s POV. You get some suspense thrown in like normal, but this had a different vibe than the previous books. It had a “satisfied tying up loose ends” feel. Not just for Preppy, but for all of them or at least I felt that way.

"The greatest gift I was ever given, was death. Because only then did I learn what it meant to truly live."

This story took some unexpected twists and turns. I will say the last few chapters I was beyond shocked. HOLY SHIT!! It was so shocking, I think I sat there with my mouth open and was like WTF! OMG! WHAT!! I was so surprised, but it was perfect! What a freaking ride this whole series has been. T.m. Frazier is the master at shocking the shit out of you! BUT the one thing that I loved most about Preppy’s books...was how he grew as a character and was able to let some of those walls down and actually feel...actually love. He has this gritty, dark side, but he also showed his lovable softer side in this...swoon!! Preppy is 100% protective and you better watch out if you screw with something that belongs to him or that he loves. We also get some glimpses of his past childhood through out the series and I adored that. It just showed how much King, Bear and Prep were a family. These guys have each others backs through everything. There were a few times that I did shed some tears. One moment was between him and King...oh lord...talk about a bromance with these guys.

T.m did a phenomenal job with this series and I am so sad to see it come to an end. She answered every question I ever had...she didn’t leave us hanging. You get your happily ever after, it may not be conventional, but it is a perfect ending. Friendship, love, family! This was sweet, funny and sexy. It was also gritty, violent and all kinds of dirty...oh yes! Again it was perfection for me! 5 Plus Stars!
family to me was everything, but the saying that blood was thicker than water didn't mean jack shit to me because I knew who my family was and blood was something we spilled for one another, not shared.

EXCERPT FROM RIDE ROUGH: “What am I going to do? My entire life is wrapped up in him. My job. Where I live. My car. Where Mom lives. Everything. Oh, God. This is going to be a nightmare, isn’t it?” Maverick grasped Alexa’s hands. “One thing at a time. You’re out. You can stay here as long as you need to. I have plenty of room. I’ll help you through it. That’ll give you time to figure out what it is you want. There’s no rush.” “Okay,” she said. “Okay. God, thank you.” A shiver raced over her skin. “You don’t have to thank me. I’m so relieved for you that I might fall the fuck over,” he said, his thumb rubbing over her knuckles. She almost managed a little smile. “Your hands are like ice, Al. I shouldn’t have made you stand her all this time when you’re soaking wet.” Alexa shook her head. “It felt good to get it out, Maverick.” “Glad to hear it. Would a hot shower make you feel better? I can find you a T-shirt and a pair of boxers to change into while your clothes dry.” All the TLC and understanding he was giving her reached right inside her chest. When was the last time someone had taken care of her this way? The last time you were with Maverick. The truth of that thought made her breath catch. “Yeah. I’d like that,” she managed. He gave a tight nod and stepped back, and she missed his heat immediately. “Uh, good. That’s good. You remember your way around?” “Of course,” she said. How much time had she spent here over the years? Even before they dated? At one point, Maverick’s place had practically been a second home. “You okay?” he asked, watching her. She pushed off the door. “I don’t know yet,” she said, coming to him. “But what I do know is how grateful I am to you. For everything. For being there when I told you not to. For listening. For just . . . being you.” “Always.” He crossed his big arms and ducked his chin, like something about the exchange made him uncomfortable. “I mean it,” she said, and then she pressed onto tiptoes and kissed his cheek, his stubble tickling her lips. “You saved me tonight.” “No,” he said, eyes flashing, one brow arched. “You saved yourself, Al. I was just your getaway driver.” Staring into one another’s eyes, the tender moment stretched out, morphed, suddenly flashed hot. Being so close to him set her body on fire, and finally she could actually consider acting on it. Need roared through her, a living, breathing thing. “Maverick,” she whispered. “Fuck, Alexa, I think you better go take that shower,” he said, his jaw ticking. “Now.” She released a shaky breath and nodded. He was right. Of course, he was. So, showering. She could handle that. Afterward, God only knew what she was going to do.

REVIEW - 4.5 Stars

I love a good baseball romance and this one hit the mark! Sports romances are difficult to write because there is a small sweet spot between too much sports detail and not enough. I happen to be a huge fan of baseball, so there was no problem for me. But, I contemplated it as if I were a novice and I think K. Bromberg did a fabulous job finding a balance. There is also a lot of humor, sometimes causing me to draw funny looks when I started laughing in random locations. The romance between Easton and Scout is hot and steamy, as well as sweet and romantic. Throw in some witty banter and explosive personalities and this book sizzles with tons of chemistry.

Easton is a definitely a hero you’ll fall in love with. He is a hot as hell, talented and famous athlete. He is dedicated and focused on his career, his charity work, the fans, and his family. But, what intrigued me most was the person he turned out to be despite an overly critical and controlling father, a huge legacy to live up to, and an alcoholic father. I admired the fact that he wasn’t completely jaded and after he gets to know Scout just a little bit, he doesn’t run from his growing feelings for her. He hasn’t become jaded about love and he wants to explore what they could have. He was also very logical about Scout’s precarious situation and the fact that they needed to hide their relationship, rather than pitching (no pun intended) a fit and trying to guilt her into not keeping them a secret. However, he’s strong and determined, so he doesn’t give her any leeway beyond those parameters for avoiding him. He forces her to face the relationship and stop running from her fears. I admired him more and more throughout the book as he put up with her reoccurring, emotional baggage.

Scout started out strong for me. I liked her immediately and thought she was witty and fun. She is definitely a strong character and the fact that she accepted her choice of career came with the locker room crap and simply went with it, ratcheted up my respect. I empathized with her sorrow and fear over losing her dad and my heart broke for her every time he pushed her away. The promise he made her make really aggravated me because it put a world of pressure on her at a time when she was already emotionally drained after the loss of her brother years before and now knowing her father was dying. However, there were glimpses into their relationship that showed he was a loving dad, he simply didn’t want his daughter to see him waste away and die.
My only issue with this book was in Scout’s continued hand-wringing over her situation with Easton. Her concerns were legitimate in the beginning and on through the book for a while. But, then I started to get annoyed. She gave me whiplash with how fast she would change her attitude and decisions sometimes. It started to grate on my nerves because she seemed to be habitually taking two steps forward and one and a half steps back. It made me feel bad for Easton and love him even more for sticking it out. However, this small issue wasn’t enough to make me dislike Scout, it was simply a little annoying at times.

If you’re like me and didn’t notice that this is book 1 in a duet, let me give you a heads up…MAJOR CLIFFHANGER! Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long for book 2! I really did enjoy reading this book and I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of Scout and Easton’s story. This one goes on the possible re[read shelf since I could see myself re-reading it in the future.
