Hard Rules is the story of Shane and Emily.   This is book one in the Dirty Money series and yes it does end in a cliffhanger. 
I have to say that the first 30% of the book was kind of slow to me.  I put the book down as I wasn't really interested, but I kept saying it's Lisa Renee Jones and I enjoy her books.  So I picked it up again a few days later and got hooked.  So glad I did!
Shane is a lawyer who was destined for the top in NYC, but had to return home to help his family out of some shady things.  His father and brother are both conniving, sketchy people...did not like his brother.   Trying to get his family business on the up and up hasn't and won't be easy, but Shane needs people around him that can help and he trusts.  When he meets Emily in a unusual way, he's drawn to her.  There is something about her that he wants to know.  But luck isn't on his side or is it?  Will she be the end of Shane?
Emily is hiding something and running, but what?  She is such a mystery and I need to know more.  When she meets Shane she's immediately attracted to him, but it's best to keep her distance.  But fate keeps throwing them together.  Will she give into one night of passion?  I have so many questions...Why is she running?  What is she scared of?  What's with the phone calls?  Who is she?
These two had an instant attraction.  What starts as one night ends up being a sort of grounding for them.  They end up falling for each other and will test each other.  However, both are involved in a dangerous game, will they survive?   Shane wants to protect Emily from his family, so there are some moments where he pushes her away, but Emily won't go.  Will his problems tear them apart or will Emily's secrets be the ending of them?
This ended up being a good read.  It was intense at times and the suspense pulls you in.  Full of secrets, drama and intensity between these two.  Seriously you won't know who to trust or what is going on at times because you will be thinking one thing and then you are wrong.  The ending, what can I say, but oh my...I have no idea what is going to happen and I want to know now!  Nicely done...4 Stars!
