MISTAKE
Author: K Webster
Series: Breaking the Rules Series, #4 ~ Standalone
Genre: Erotic Romance

~ Synopsis ~

Opal Redding has led a life full of mistakes. She left home at an early age to pursue a dream and follow her sister to the big city. Unfortunately, that dream turned into a nightmare when she landed in the clutches of the evilest and vilest of men.

Luckily, she escaped.

Now, four years later, Opal has buckled down and focused on never making mistakes that hurt her or those around her ever again. She went after her college degree and the sexy investment banker, Trent Sutton.

For four long years, she cultivated their friendship in hopes of, one day, running off into the sunset with her prince.

As graduation nears, Trent finally notices her as a desirable woman and not just a friend. All of her hard work is finally paying off. The white picket fence and two point five kids are within her grasp.

Until she meets him.

Thad Sutton lives in the shadow of his brother. Fresh out of rehab with a hopeful outlook on life, Thad meets Opal and is drawn to her more than any drug ever could. But is she toxic to his recovery?

When Opal is faced with a decision between two brothers, the right choice and the awful choice, she finds her resolve to have a perfect life begin to falter.

Will she choose the right path? Or will she make the biggest mistake of her life?

~ Review ~ 5 Stars!

I Loved this book! K. Webster’s Breaking the Rules series is one of my favorites. Mistake is an excellent addition to this series. Opal and Thad are fascinating characters.  They are both so weak and yet so strong at the same time.
Opal and Thad both struggle from their own forms of addiction. Thad’s is more what you would expect. He has just returned from rehab for alcohol and drugs, and is determined to finally turn his life around. When he meets Opal, she is like a life line to help him crawl out of the whole he has dug himself. Despite her being on a “date” with his brother, Thad doesn’t waste any time in pursuing Opal and convincing her that they should be together.
Opal is determined to correct the mistakes of her past and in doing so, has created an addiction, in a way, of her own. She is blind to anything but the plan she laid out for herself. Graduate college, take a job in Jackson and Jordan’s company, marry the stable, trustworthy guy, have 2.5 kids…blah, blah, blah. She is so focused on this rule that she can’t look beyond Thad’s past and see what a future together could look like.
In my opinion, this book took a really unique twist on a story line shaped by dependence.  Opal’s goal is stop making mistakes, to find a steady, safe life. And yet, Thad seems to be the more reasonable voice between the two of them. He sees the reality in front of them and knows that despite the trials they would face, they could be the solution to each other’s’ internal battles. But, Opal’s stubbornness is causes Thad to rethink this view when it becomes clear that obsession besides alcohol and drugs can be just as debilitating. Thad begins to question whether or not he can handle his own recovery while being Opal’s rock. His foundation is shaky enough without taking on the burdens of another person. It’s so unusual to see a character like Thad’s be the more reasonable and resolute person. He struggles, a lot, but his perception is real. Opal is so lost in her delusions of what her life should be that she doesn’t even see the detriment it is to her life.
K. Webster always write characters that come alive. Thad and Opal have such distinct personalities. I was rooting for them, hurting for them, and angry at their stupidity. Their struggles were real, it wasn’t cliché or unrealistic, as so many novels that deal with addiction are.
We get to see some of Andi and Jackson in the story as well. Again, K. Webster brings a unique aspect to the story, showing that after the HEA, life isn’t perfect. Andi and Jackson both have volatile personalities, however it is clear in this book as it is in all the others, that their love will weather the storms. Their struggle in this book was devastating and it broke my heart for them. I was sad to see the series end, but then I got to the surprise first chapter of the next book at the end! I sighed in relief to know that there was more because things were not all wrapped up with Andi and Jackson.
Opal and Thad have only addicted me to this series even more!
