The name’s Barrett Callahan. Yeah, that Barrett Callahan—the one the press dubbed “Bare” after those naked sexting pictures surfaced. At twenty-five, I was armed with an MBA from Harvard, an executive position at my father’s Fortune 500 company, a penthouse, and a different piece of delectable eye candy in my bed every weekend. I had a life most men dreamed of. But then my father decided to run for president, and my playboy lifestyle became a liability to his campaign that was built on family values. My “makeover” comes in the form of a fake fiancée who I don't even get to choose--one who is an uptight, choirgirl acting priss but also sexy-as-hell.
My latest relationship had gone down in flames, and I was drowning in a sea of student loans when in true Godfather status, James Callahan made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Seven figures for seven months on the campaign trail pretending to be the adoring fiancée of his son, Barrett. As soon as he won the election, our engagement would be dissolved amicably for the press, I was free to ride off into the sunset a million dollars richer, and because of the NDA, no one would be the wiser. Sure, I’d never met the guy, but I’d been a theater nerd in high school. I could pull off any role from Lady Macbeth to Maria Von Trapp. But that was before I met my fake fiancé—the infuriating, self-absorbed, egotistical, drop-dead-sexy King of the Manwhores.
A book by Katie Ashley is always a good idea. Her newest, Running Mate is no different. This is a standalone book featuring the presidential gossip worthy candidate son and his new fake for the press fiancé.
Addison Monroe was not having a good day and everything about it screamed train wreck! As the Volunteer Services Coordinator for Senator Callahan’s presidential campaign, it pays for her to be put together. Being called into the office of the head of the campaign has Addison worried that her crappy day will end with her being fired, but to her surprise her life is about to change forever.
Barrett “Bare” Callahan, wild child son of Senator Callahan is a connoisseur of women. Never one to settle down, but always looking to score, he loves women and they love him. He gleefully earned his nickname with the press a few years prior while partying with Prince Harry in Vegas. No one loves a party… and a party full of women more than he. Although harmless, his antics have put his father’s campaign at risk. The solution? A fake fiancée to get the votes.
Barrett doesn’t usually go for women who aren’t blonde, but Addison Monroe sets him back on his toes. She doesn’t put up with any of his shit, and they bicker with each other immediately. A million dollars to be his fiancé will go a long way for Addison, but only if she doesn’t kill her “fiancé” first.
Barrett and Addison embark on the campaign trail with Senator Callahan and quickly become America’s “It” couple. It gets to the point where they each don’t really know what’s real and what’s not. They both begin to fall for one another, each shying away from fully expressing themselves. When Barrett decides to go all in, Addison’s fear of him being swayed by their story rears its head. Barrett has to prove to Addison he’s in for keeps and Addison has to be willing to take a leap of faith for the one she loves.
This was a great story and I enjoyed every second of reading it. The writing was witty, fun, serious when needed, and delightfully sexy. A classic Katie Ashley book. I sincerely hope that this is the first of a series as the mention of Barrett’s brother Thorn piqued my curiosity.
