USA Today bestselling author Sawyer Bennett hits the ice with the story of a playboy athlete whose winning ways lead him to a beautiful woman with a lot to lose.

Carolina Cold Fury star Garrett Samuelson never wants to miss out on a single minute of fun. Whether he’s playing hockey, hanging out with friends, or walking the red carpet with a new date on his arm, he lives every day to the fullest. When he meets Olivia Case, he sees someone who’s exactly his type—confident, sexy, smart . . . his next fling. But the more he pursues her, the more Garrett shares a side of himself that other women don’t normally get to see.

Olivia has been keeping a secret. While Garrett lives for the next thrill, Olivia’s not sure she’ll live to see the next day. She’s undergoing treatment for some serious medical issues, and she doesn’t have time for a relationship with no guarantees—especially one with a hot-as-sin womanizer who won’t take no for an answer. But as she gets to know the real Garrett, Olivia can’t help falling for him . . . hard. To reveal the truth would mean risking everything—but you can’t score without taking the tough shots.
Another Cold Fury novel to love! Sawyer Bennett took an interesting chance with this story line, but I think she pulled it off quite successfully.
Garrett is the ultimate player. That phrase almost doesn’t do his lifestyle justice. But somehow, the author makes you fall in love with him in on the first page! The reformed bad boy is a common theme, but in this case, I don’t think you can clarify Garrett as a bad boy, he’s got all the makings of a delicious alpha, but his personality is more jovial. He is carefree and happy. Although, there is a catalyst for his anti-monogamy ways, it’s a small incident that he doesn’t even realize made the impact that it did. He doesn’t live this way to escape his reality, or because he is too jaded to believe in love, he’s just enjoying life in the way that fits him. I was pretty amazed that Sawyer was able to endear him to me immediately, despite his oat sowing ways.
My only issue with Garrett, was that while I believe every “player” meets the one for him eventually, I couldn’t wrap my head around someone with his history committing to a woman with cancer, within three days of meeting her. It’s one thing to change your outlook and give a relationship a try, but to take that on along with her health and possibility of dying? I loved Garrett for it, but it gave me pause because it didn’t seem realistic.
Olivia was a harder nut to crack. While I liked her right away, I didn’t attach myself to her character as quickly as I did Garrett. However, she grew on my quickly. She’s very strong, but she knows how to lean on her friends rather than always playing the independent card and hurting herself in the process. She has a sweet disposition and for the most part, a pretty sunny personality. Her interactions with Stevie added a lot of fun to the story. Stevie alone added color and laughter to the story! I think the author did a fantastic job of helping the reader to get inside the head of someone with her condition, to a certain extent. This was another place where the realism was just a little bit lost.
The love story between these two is sweet on one side and holy hot as hell on the other. Steamy, steamy, steamy! Watching Garrett and Olivia fall in love was captivating.
As I’m sure it was intended, I was pretty pissed at Olivia for being stupid later in the story. She kept claiming that her actions were her attempt to be unselfish, when in reality, she was doing the exact opposite. It is never altruistic to take away someone’s choice because you think you “know” what’s best for them. To think your way will help them avoid future pain when all you’re doing is causing them to experience that pain right now.
I have to admit, there were moments when I actually wondered if Sawyer was going to take that leap and not give me my HEA. However, in the end, I finished the book with a smile. Definitely worth the read. I’m a big Sawyer Bennett fan and this book joins the ranks of her in her fabulous collection! 4 Stars!
