Risk It
Rule Breakers # 4
By: Jennifer Chance
Releasing June 2nd, 2015
Loveswept

Blurb
Jennifer Chance’s Rule Breakers series turns up the heat as a wealthy playboy and a beautiful con artist engage in a high-stakes game of seduction.

As dominating in business as he is in bed, Rand Sterling Winston IV always gets what he wants. And even before he realizes that she’s scammed him into paying triple the cost for her friend’s painting, he wants Dani Michaels. To catch her alone, Rand demands that she personally deliver his purchase. The attraction between them is immediate and electric, and he knows she feels it, too. So when the part-time petty thief rebuffs his advances, he gives her a choice: a night in jail or an evening with him.

Despite her checkered past, Dani has never met someone like Rand: brooding, intense, and oh so tempting. Only a man with a broken soul could make control feel this dangerous. Still, when Rand proposes a no-strings, no-holds-barred affair, Dani’s more than a little intrigued. It’ll be the trickiest con she’s ever run and a chance to indulge her steamiest fantasies—nothing more. But as their encounters grow increasingly intimate, Dani uncovers a vulnerable side to Rand’s steely exterior and opens her heart to the ultimate risk.

Review- 3 Stars
I really enjoyed the book before this one in the series, so I was excited to read this one. It was good, but it didn’t live up to Want It.
This author gives her characters a good amount of depth. She creates a backstory that holds up the personality traits they exhibit in the book. Dani and Rand both experienced dark and damaging childhoods. As a result, they have both developed a hard exterior, a determination to rise above and always win, to never be hurt because you’re always three steps ahead.
Put these two similar personalities together, add to it a raging attraction, and things get crazy. To be completely honest, it took me some time to like both of these characters, but I never truly fell for Rand. His need to win against Dani by breaking down all of her walls, came off as pretty heartless at times. There were little moments where I could see the better man shining through the tough veneer and I was just getting to like him when the book ended.
Dani grabs the reader’s sympathy incredibly fast. She’s very strong and you can see that there is a deep capacity for love from her relationship with her foster brother. Her need to win is definitely a defense mechanism and while in some books it might have annoyed me after a while, it was necessary when going up against Rand and his nefarious plans. She’s got a lot of spunk and is very witty. I warmed up to her and ended liking her character.
There is definitely some off the charts hot scenes in this book. The author took them in some interesting directions at times and others were more conventional. But, no matter which, the room was filling up with steam from the pages of my book.
The plot is a great premise for a story, but it wasn’t executed all that well. Here’s the thing, I was starting to really enjoy the book…and then it ended. The ending is very abrupt and I felt almost like the author was on a deadline and just needed to finish the book. We turn the page and all of the sudden, Rand is in love, whereas just a few pages ago, he was still determined to break Dani and walk away. It also didn’t resolve for me. While we learn many details of Dani’s childhood, Rand’s remains a little vague. Also, Dani is talking about how it won’t last forever until the very last page. So, I shut the book asking, “Where is the rest?” If the author had continued, I would have absolutely turned the pages and kept reading. I feel like there is more to their story and I’d really, really like to know what it is. If the author wrote a companion novel to this one, I’d be all over it.
I have enjoyed the books in this series, so I would recommend this one if you are going to go through them all. I always prefer to read all the books in a series. However, as a standalone, I’d recommend a petition to the author to write a second installment.
