Book Description:
A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.

Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

Review - 5 Stars!

This book is a fascinating mixture of a very serious subject and the same steam and humor I’ve found in all of Marquita Valentine’s books. This book is practically a standalone, however there is an interconnecting character that ties it to the first two. They are all fan-freaking-tastic, so I recommend reading them all anyway!
Evangeline is a victim of severe spousal abuse. On the night her husband almost kills her, she escapes and is rescued by a cop named Hunter.
Hunter takes the broken and battered woman at a shelter, but there is something about her that he can’t get out of his mind.
Fast forward to today, Evangeline is mostly healed…physically. But, she is still hiding in fear, keeping her past a secret because she still harbors guilt that she ever let it happen in the first place. When she sees Hunter again, the chemistry between them is unwelcome and I really couldn’t blame her. When someone who is supposed to love and cherish you, protect you, turns into your very own nightmare, it can make you question your every decision. Not to mention everyone else’s actions. Eva is trying to establish a new life, one where she is in control, but old habits die hard and making friends is a struggle. Especially when said friend makes you want to tear his clothes off and have your wicked way with him.
Hunter is a very special, well written hero. Coming from a horrific childhood, he has more in common with Eva than she knows. He’s learned lessons that give him a unique ability to understand her and be patient with her. However, he knows she’s the one for him and he is gently persistent. He struggles with his own demons and he worries how Evangeline will respond to his “outlet.” Keeping it a secret is both smart and stupid. As much as I hate the dishonesty, if he had told her in the beginning, it would have sent her running. I’d probably have done the same thing. His reasons for what he does to exorcise his past are justified but, Eva will need to know and understand him a whole lot better before she’ll accept it.
The subject of abuse is never an easy one and I think a lot of people avoid books dealing with heavy themes such as this. However, I really do recommend that you give it a shot. The author seems to have created an excellent balance between it and the love story. She focuses mainly on the recovery of a victim, how she gains strength and courage, finally accepting that she is worthy of a happy life.
Every time I finish one of this Author’s books, I’m ready for more. I was checking for this ARC at least once a week since I read the book before it. And, it was worth it! Officially shelved with my rereads!
