LOVING LUCAS
Lies & Leather #1
Violetta Rand
Releasing Oct 20th, 2015
Loveswept

Perfect for fans of Joanna Wylde and Monica Murphy, Violetta Rand’s explosive new Lies & Leather series kicks off with a red-hot motorcycle racer who rides hard and plays for keeps.

Twenty-one-year-old Karlie Augustine is a survivor. She’s smart and tough, but she’s in too deep with a bad boyfriend who isn’t above breaking her spirit—or her body. Luckily, help arrives in the form of a leather-clad, motorcycle-riding hunk on the right side of the law. Lucas Lafontaine is pure muscle, a Corpus Christi cop who ignites something primal deep within Karlie. And when he offers her room and board in exchange for housekeeping, she finally starts to feel safe again.

As their arrangement turns deliciously decadent, Lucas gets hooked on Karlie’s killer body and fighting spirit. He wants to heal the pain he sees behind her eyes, but to protect her he needs to keep her close, especially now that her psycho ex won’t take a hint. Even as Lucas fights his own battle for custody of his young son, he knows that what he’s found with Karlie is real—and that he’d do anything to protect the woman he wants to take to the finish line.

Review - 4.5 Stars!
I loved The Devil’s Den series and I loved that this book was an offshoot. I have really enjoyed all of Violetta’s book that I have read and I was looking forward to this one. It’s every bit as good as the others I’ve read! Violetta often touches on some pretty serious subjects and while she uses them to build an interesting story, I didn’t feel over whelmed with the heainess that can often accompany a story involving an abusive boyfriend.
Karlie hasn’t had all of her spirit destroyed as the book opens and we immediately get to see a spark of fire in her that I hoped would grow. The character finds a good balance between the two personality traits that accompany the beaten down, unsure woman, and the fighter wth determination to succeed. The flips back and forth are pretty typical of someone in her situation, progression dn regression being her constant companions. She has a deep sense of loyalty that really makes you love and admore her.
My only complaint with Karlie was her obsession with feeling as though she is empty for not knowing her history. Biology doesn’t make a person. You are mostly a product of your environment and beyond that, you are still what you choose to be. Failing to recognize that will eventually ruin your future. Especially when finding out your history only makes your negative opinions of yourself worse.
Lucas…oh my, Lucas. That man is all that is delicious in a man. He is valiant and chivalrous, helping a damsel in distress when no one else would. He doesn’t fight very hard at opening himself back up to love after being destroyed by his ex-wife. He’s dedicated to his job as a cop, to loving Karlie, and to helping her find her way. He dominates just enough to be sexy as hell, then whips out the soft and sweet guy that just makes you melt. That’s not to say he isn’t without flaws, or he would be unbelievable as a hero. The difference is that he is able to recognize those flaws and try to overcome them.
The chemistry between these two it HOT! More than once, I went to read in front of the air conditioner. The emotional chemistry is just as stong and I loved watching their relationship grow beyond the way they burn up the sheets in the bedroom.
It was certainly fun to revisit Craig from The Devil’s Den series, and I really enjoyed Karlie’s friends, Brandon & Marie. They often brought a lighter dynamic to the story, keeping it from becoming too serious. They radiate with love for eachother and Karlie.
I hope there are more books coming in this series. I will look forward to them with anticipation. I also like that fact that this book was a fairly quick read, not just the length, but with a fast moving plot. It doesn’t rush, but I felt satisfied at the end, finding resolution without feeling as though I’m ready to give up and just be done with the book. Instead, I anticipated another book, wishing there were more to move on to right away.

An environmental scientist by day, Violetta Rand has been in love with writing since childhood. Struck with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age, she wrote short stories illustrated by her best friend and sold them in her neighborhood. Rand enjoys outdoor activities, music, reading, and losing herself in the world she brings to life in the pages of her stories. The only thing she loves more than writing is her wonderful relationship with her husband.
